Promised Pictures

So, remember when I promised you pictures of Sam’s surgery? Well, here they are. I’ll put the gory ones after the jump so that if you are squeamish and don’t like that sort of thing, you don’t have to look. It isn’t really very bloody or gross. I say that, but, remember, I’m a nurse. It really looks pretty good and he got the stitches out today. (That’s how we were able to get the pictures. I mean, everyone takes their camera to their son’s orthopedic appointment when he is going to get the stitches out and a dressing change, right?)

Here’s the xrays:

The first one is his finger when they xrayed it prior to surgery.

Sam's Broken Finger Pre-Surgery

The next one is post surgery with the pin and wires in.

Broken Finger Post Surgery

I worried a lot about my boy while he was in surgery and, really, for the last week. He’s been in a lot of pain and it’s been a much bigger deal than I thought it was going to be. I’m proud of him. Now that he’s seen the ortho doc and has gotten the “it’s healing well” and I know it’s not infected with the demon MRSA, I am relaxing a little bit. I think it’s actually really cool how it all was done. 20 years ago, they would have just let the thing flop over and be deformed for the rest of his life. Now we paid a bunch of money, put him through surgery and still his finger will never be the same. I kid. It will be better than if we hadn’t done anything. So far, so good. He still takes the pain meds from time to time and he probably will need to for awhile. In 4 weeks, we go back and see if the pin and wires can come out. We’re supposed to give him the big gun pain med before that because they will be doing it in the office without anesthetic. When that’s done, I’ll be relieved. I think.

Happy Halloween, everyone! I’ll be showing you pictures of my costume tomorrow or the next day, and you will, no doubt, have no idea what I am, and then you can all laugh at me. Isabelle knows what I am and she thinks it’s hilarious so, that’s all that matters.

Finally, if you don’t want to see the pictures that might make you squeamish, just click comment and don’t scroll up.

Here’s the picture pictures:

Button Button

That’s actually a button on the back of his finger that anchors all the wires.

Pinhead, Wires and Stitches

That pearl at the top of his finger is the “pinhead” so to speak. The stitches are still in and, yes, those are wires.

Poor guy, tell his is brave for going through and all! I hope Sam, You, and Jason are feeling better about this. He will have one heck of a middle finger to stick up when he’s older when this is all done. :)

  12. Ugh! Poor guy! I remember how it felt when my son had to go into surgery for his broken wrist. They took a bone graft out of his hip and put it in his wrist and then pinned it all together. It was nerve wracking waiting for the surgery to be over! He was a trooper – I think it was harder on me than him!
