In Minnesota, it is against state law to start school before Labor Day. The reasoning behind this is that there are a lot of people in the state who either work at or are in some way or another involved with the State Fair, for which the last day is Labor Day. Today is the day after Labor Day! The day that most moms have been waiting for since the first day of summer break. Or at least since the day after summer break started when their kids said to them for the first time, in what seems like a million times that they have said it since then, that they are boooored!
Today, yes, there will be mommies who cry when they put there little ones on the bus for the first time ever. And there will be mommies who shed a tear as their children walk out the door and get in a car to drive themselves to school for the first time. And still, there will be more mommies who know that this will be the last first day of school for their babies and as they sit down to a cup of coffee, they will be choking back a sob.
Not me. I am going to close the door with them on the other side and I am going to rejoice in the quiet of the day. I am going to relish in every single peaceful minute that I have until they come home. When they do, I will be happy to see them and hear all about their day and I will enjoy that just as much as the peace and quiet that I had enjoyed all day. When they leave, if you see my eyes water and get all red, it is just allergies. Happens every year at this same time. Same with my drippy nose. Has nothing at all to do with my babies, er, I mean, my kids going off to 7th and 10th grade. Nothing at all. I am not even thinking about the fact that Emily will be able to drive a car all by herself by the end of the school year, nor am I thinking about the fact that Sam will become a teenager during this school year. I am not thinking about those things at all. And you can not tell me that I am. Red, watery eyes and drippy nose or not.

Awwww, lol… those allergies are probably getting the best of you right now, but in a few days they’ll be gone and you’ll be reveling in the silence for real
Have a tissue…Hugs
I thought the drippy nose is because you’re a cokehead.
I’m right there with you! It feels like time for school to start again, but as I kissed her goodbye, I realized that this is the second-to-last first day of school for Kelly (besides college), and Rose’s very last, as she is a college senior, starting today. The past 21 years have flown, man!
its so funny how people get an allergy flare up in teh beginning of September isn’t it?
Damn ragweed…
I think it’s funny they’ve outlawed starting school in August. Our kids have been back to school in August for as long as I can remember. Now if we could make it illegal for the primary to be held before Christmas… but that’s just too newsy.
Today, yes, there will be mommies who cry when they put there little ones on the bus for the first time ever.
Should be their.
oh baby.
enjoy.
it is truly a happy happy day…..
In my opinion, no school should ever start before Labor day. We started on the ST! Can you believe that! I though it was way too early, and I remember always starting after labor day when I went to school. Oh well. I know that I will rejoice the day I have all three of my girls in full days of school. For now, the only one that is in full time is Mary. Anna will start next year, and I still have a few years for Alexandria. I. just. can’t. wait.:-w
on the 21ST
Ya know, *sniff*, those stupid allergies hit me this time of year as well – usually middle of August though. By now I’m enjoying paying only 1/2 the daycare bill etc….
Erin–I got the much needed silence today.
Trish–Thanks. You are mentioned in my post for tomorrow.
Fab–Shhh…You aren’t supposed to tell anyone. It was our secret.
Suzi–Where does the time go? I am freaking about the whole driving thing with the middle child. And the baby has a girlfriend. Ack!
Blue–It is. I’m thinking about you, girl. hugs.
Finn–Yeah, I know. It’s miserable. *sniff*
Oh yeah right. And I had a bug in my eye! LOL!
Muwah.
Uisce–You know? I have been thinking the same thing.
Speck–You got that right, sister.
Sarah–I remember those days of waiting until they were all in school full time. Of course, then I had day care kids at home with me. lol You know, I read this first comment 2 or 3 times through trying to see where I missed the day that your kids went back to school. Then I got the second comment and laughed at us both. lol
Fantastagirl–Well that is a reason for rejoicing!
Shortie–I thought of you today, my friend.
I was one of those mothers who did NOT cry this morning. Matter of fact I drove them to school to make sure they made it to their destination. Then it was off to a ME day!!:)
