In Minnesota, it is against state law to start school before Labor Day. The reasoning behind this is that there are a lot of people in the state who either work at or are in some way or another involved with the State Fair, for which the last day is Labor Day. Today is the day after Labor Day! The day that most moms have been waiting for since the first day of summer break. Or at least since the day after summer break started when their kids said to them for the first time, in what seems like a million times that they have said it since then, that they are boooored!

Today, yes, there will be mommies who cry when they put there little ones on the bus for the first time ever. And there will be mommies who shed a tear as their children walk out the door and get in a car to drive themselves to school for the first time. And still, there will be more mommies who know that this will be the last first day of school for their babies and as they sit down to a cup of coffee, they will be choking back a sob.

Not me. I am going to close the door with them on the other side and I am going to rejoice in the quiet of the day. I am going to relish in every single peaceful minute that I have until they come home. When they do, I will be happy to see them and hear all about their day and I will enjoy that just as much as the peace and quiet that I had enjoyed all day. When they leave, if you see my eyes water and get all red, it is just allergies. Happens every year at this same time. Same with my drippy nose. Has nothing at all to do with my babies, er, I mean, my kids going off to 7th and 10th grade. Nothing at all. I am not even thinking about the fact that Emily will be able to drive a car all by herself by the end of the school year, nor am I thinking about the fact that Sam will become a teenager during this school year. I am not thinking about those things at all. And you can not tell me that I am. Red, watery eyes and drippy nose or not.
