Ikea is Where You’ll Find Me…Maybe

Today we might go to Ikea. I know…Pffft, Ikea! Actually, I don’t know. What is it that people find so offensive about Ikea? Anyway, we are going to go and get this:

ikea-table-and-chairs.jpg

If you click on the picture, it will take you to a page where you can order your very own. It’s only $79 through Sunday. It isn’t for our kitchen or dining room. Let me explain.

When I was doing daycare, we converted the lower level “family room” into the daycare playroom and just used our “formal living room” as our family room. We like our living room/family room where it is. Still, we don’t really need a playroom any more since I am not doing daycare, the kids are older and Isabelle isn’t here all the time. We decided to change that room into a “teen room”. There will be some toys for Isabelle, but mostly it will be a place where Sam and Emily can have their friends over, watch TV or movies, play XBox, play board games or put together puzzles or whatever and also be able to do their homework. They will also be able to utilize that room for sleep overs. Emily wants to have a regular bed in her room again instead of a futon (which is what she got for her birthday several years ago and has found that it takes up way too much room in her tiny bedroom), so we may put the futon out in the teen room as both a couch and as a place to sleep if need be. Jason has completely painted that room and it looks really nice. Eventually we will put in laminate flooring. (That will have to wait until after the party.) Anyway, the table is for playing games, doing homework, etc., which is why we don’t want to spend an enormous amount of money on it.

I just checked the only store we have here in Minnesota and they have it in stock. Yay! I think we may have to go tomorrow because Sam’s tournament runs all weekend and while his team may not make it until the end, if we count on that, Murphy’s law* says that they will. Then we will have missed our chance.

Let me just say that going to Ikea is more than just driving to a nearby store. It is a day trip for us. Ikea is near the Mall of America which is about 45 minutes to an hour away. Depending on traffic. Traffic can be awful because MOA and Ikea are near the airport. Airport traffic can suck.

Huh! Who woulda thought I could write an entire post about a trip to Ikea? Sorry if I bored ya to death. I read something over at Venomous Kate’s blog that sort of explains my inane chatter about Ikea today. This is what she said:

At some point I realized that most of my readers come here for one reason: to find out what’s on my mind today. Were we face-to-face, I’d probably tell them about the news story I just heard, maybe about something annoying that happened during my day. They’d respond with similar things, and perhaps I’d bring up something I’d read about that I know is a topic they’re interested in.**

So see, the way I figure it, if we were face to face or talking on the phone, we would just have a conversation about what I am or am not going to do today and/or what you are or are not going to do today. Because we are friends and that’s what friends do.

Did I tell you that I might go to Ikea today? What are you going to do?

*I don’t really know what Murphy’s Law says, but it seems like it is something like that.

And if we were talking face to face, I would tell you what an incredibly great idea you have to turn the room into a teen room.

  2. Mr. Fabulous says:

    Oh.

I thought it was going to be my room when I moved in with you guys.

Well, this is a helluva way to find out.

I guess if I want to live in MN I’ll have to move in with Dr. Mom.

  3. Speck says:

    Sawwwwweeet!
Tonight I’m going to an Ice Cream Party at The Chunk’s Day camp. I baked the “please Mom will you bring us a home baked dessert for the ice cream party” cake last night and it looked wonderful in my “that’s a pan” with my little name on it and everything. Then I dropped it off at the day camp this morning like I was instructed, because I follow directives so well, dontcha know, (stop snickering) and Midget DayCamp Director tells me its a cake walk….oh you mean like they take your cake home. Well this might be information that I needed…you stupid little midget.

I rant about this more on my blog if you’re still awake.
    Kisses.
I promise to get your virtual gift in the virtual mail. I’m so ashamed I’m running this late.

  4. Finn says:

If you’re going to Ikea, I’m going to Pottery Barn. Sibling rivalry and all…

  5. Lynda says:

We don’t have IKEA. The closest one is in Minnesota, I think.

I have nothing against them, because I have never been to one. LOL. :d

  6. Melissa says:

I love IKEA and wish we had one within a reasonable driving distance, but my budget is probably better off that isn’t the case. :)

  7. Moi loves IKEA!! They have pretty cool things at low prices. Exactly what one needs to furnish a room for the occasional guest or like you are doing, a teeny room (their tastes change fast and kids are usually pretty rough on things). I usually stock up on paper napkins, tea lights and such. Ours is about 15 minutes by car and when we go there, we NEVER come out empty handed.

So. ‘Nuff about IKEA :) We’re leaving early tomorrow morning for Hannover to visit friends. If there’s not too much traffic and we can keep a good speed (100-120mph – I love German autobahns!!), it should take us about 6 hours to get there.

  8. Judy says:

    Great idea Shelli!
The table and chairs look great! I love doing puzzles, that would make a nice place to do them. I already have a table for that but still it’s a nice table to do what ever at!
    Peace!
PS Thanks for the comments at my Blog~~:@)

  9. usedtobeme says:

I have never been to Ikea, so I’m not sure what the hubbub is all about.

Today I am working (okay, I’m slacking off at work) and this weekend I am cleaning the dramas’ bedrooms before they come home from California.

  10. I LOVE IKEA!

There is nothing wrong with it. And it is a good 45 minutes for me as well… As long as 35w moves.

  11. You talk about friends? Didn’t you read on my blog that I didn’t get the IKEA job I applied for? Now, you want to know what I’m doing today? I’m rethinking this whole thing!!! Traitor!!!

(On another note, I added Birthday Girl to your MyBlogLog tag. How cute is that?)

  12. Tug says:

I love IKEA…don’t know if there’s one around here or not – should check that out I guess.

I hope to do not much of anything this weekend, but need to clean, do laundry, reupholster a chair, make valances for K, & hope to play with my router. And, as usual, check in with the hospital news & make calls to pass that on.

I’m sorry, did you want EXCITING? ;-) (Did I say thank you for signing the guest book? THANK YOU!!)

  13. Shelli says:

Wander–Thank you. I thought it was pretty clever myself. ;)

  14. Shelli says:

Fab–No, no, no. You will have an actual bedroom. With doors on it. This room is wide open. I don’t want the kids to see you all naked and stuff.

  15. Shelli says:

Speck–No prob. I am still awake. I will read up. :)

  16. Shelli says:

    Finn–We don’t have a Pottery Barn, so that’s cool.

  17. Shelli says:

Lynda–I think that there is one in Chicago. That would be closer to you, right?

  18. Shelli says:

Melissa–I will meet you there. :)

  19. Shelli says:

CS–I agree. I love all the little doo dads that they have at Ikea. I have never been on the autobahn. I think I would be scared.

  20. Shelli says:

Judy–I know you love puzzles. Too bad we don’t live closer because then we could do a puzzle exchange. You are welcome.

  21. Shelli says:

Usedtobeme–Cleaning. I am so sick of cleaning.

  22. Shelli says:

muttprincess–I know with all the construction, the freeways suck right now.

  23. Shelli says:

People–I didn’t know. Will you ever forgive me?

How do you do that on MyBlogLog?

  24. Shelli says:

Tug–That was very exciting. You are welcome. I am following his story now with emailed journal updates. I hope it all goes well for him and his family.

  25. It’s easy. There’s an Add Tag section in your profile page. So now you’re not just a Celltechhub Buddy (you were tagged by the phone salesman), but also a Birthday Girl.

And I forgive you–but only because it’s your birthday week.
