*Working*
When Emily was a little baby, even though she wasn’t a particularly fussy baby, when ever she cried, if I started singing You Are My Sunshine to her, she would instantaneously stop crying. She had a little musical dinosaur that played that tune too, and she couldn’t sleep without it. Whenever I hear that song, I think of her.
Yesterday, when I thought about her, that song came to mind. She had an awesome day yesterday. She first texted me in the morning, from school, to tell me that she was student of the month at her high school. Then around lunch yesterday, she texted me again to tell me that she was chosen to do another solo in band for their concert. I texted her back to tell her how amazing she was and she texted back that she also raised her grade in math to a B, the highest it’s been since the beginning of the quarter. I should say that she is in Honor’s Math which is actually 11th grade math and she is only in 9th grade. To say that I am proud of her is an understatement. Emily, you are my sunshine.
I’m proud of me, too. I have been doing an awesome job at going to the gym. Since I started going back to the gym on April 11, which is 28 days ago, I have gone to the gym an average of 3.75 times per week. Actually, I was at the gym 4 times every week except last week and then I only went 2 times. But seriously, isn’t that awesome? I am averaging about 2 miles on the treadmill every time I go, too.
Sam has decided that he would like to have a blog. He wants all of you as friends. When I get him set up, I will give you all the link. Dear Lord, help us. Just kidding, Sammer, I love you. He has an odd sense of humor. Just warning you.
Have I mentioned my fear of June bugs in the last 7 days? I have? Oh well, I am going to talk about it again. I hate, HATE, HATE this time of year because of June bugs. I just dread it. It really just freaks me out. It makes me shake. I cry if I have to go outside at night when they are out. My heart starts pounding and I start hyperventilating. I make people shut off the lights outside and I wait for them to go away. If I have to be outside at night, (for instance, camping) I will pull my hood up and hunch down and try not to think about them out there.
Last night, Sam went into the kitchen where our front door is and he said, “Oh my God, Mom! You do not want to go outside tonight. Don’t even come down here and look.” He proceeded to count them and then informed me that there were 28 June bugs on my front steps. 28!! I didn’t have to look. Just hearing that made my heart race.
It’s irrational, I know, but I don’t know what to do about it. Do they have such a thing as June bugaphobia therapy?

i feel the same way about spiders . If a light has been left on outside and i need to go out the door i either do NOT go out the door, or I cover my head, move everyone the fick away and RUN like hell out and down the steps to avoid a dive bombing spider out to get me.
Bugs suck
I used to sing “you are my sunshine” to my girls when they were little too. Thanks for reminding me of a good memory.
Maybe you could get a flamethrower. That seems like a good way to deal with them.
Mac used to sing that to me, too.
That’s just awesome about Emily! Congrats to her. Congrats to you on the working out! That’s great
I’ll be on the lookout for Sam’s blog. I can’t wait to read it lol.
I hate bugs too. Gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about them.. *ick*
Emily is kicking ass and taking names. I’m so proud of her.
I can’t wait to read Sam’s blog and of course I will be his friend! I love a kid with an odd sense of humor.
I am terrified of june bugs as well. I got one tangled in my hair once, and I sat there and freaked out and cried until the june bug-ectomy was complete. Mind you I was about nineteen at the time so I had about a butt-ton of Aqua-Net in my mall bangs. Fun times, I tell you….
I like a strange sense of humor. After all, I read Fab’s blog. I think Sam will be just fine.
Shelli, I have an irrational fear of crickets. My husband says that they are vegetarian. I don’t care. Anything that small that can jump from the floor to waist high is a freak of nature. At least you have Sam looking out for you.
Yay, Emily!!
What is it with everyone and the bugs today? Fab reminded me of how much I hated bugs when I visited FL a few years ago, and that made think of spiders,(shudder), and now — this very minute– The lawn in front of my house has warmed up enough that I have a swarm of flying ants crawling up my front steps!!!!
Oh Yeah–I”MA SKEERED!!!
I freaked and forgot to add “YAY to Emily–You rock!!”
OMG! I am so glad Lynda explained on her blog what had been happening to your feed. I’m back reading now!
The blog looks fabulous!
Yay, Emily! I’m always glad to hear about girls who excel in math. Too many of my friends got ‘suddenly dumb’ sickness when they got to high school…
Oh, and don’t worry about those June bugs, Shelli. You must be mistaken. They’re not due for another 24 days. Those must be the May bug scouts. (sorry, couldn’t resist…)
I meant to ask – what does Emily play? I have a bando also. He plays clarinet in marching band and bassoon in concert band (they won’t let him march w/the bassoon even though other schools do it-grrrr).
June bugs? Boo. Everything else? Yeah!
Oh, and your blog still ain’t feeding on Bloglines. I’ll resubscribe again and see what happens…
Wow, awesome for Emily!!! Can’t wait to read Sam – I like odd senses of humor.
And bugs? yucka. all around… Peggy’s May-bug comment cracked me up!
Way to go Emily!
My Dad used to sing that song to me when I was little and I sing it to all of my grandkids.
Can’t wait to read Sam’s blog that ought to be a hoot!
June bugs I can tolerate, they just lay there. Spiders freak me absolutely out to the sobbing, screaming, heart attack stage. BIG WOWS for you and Emily. I’m getting so fat if I don’t find a gym they’re going to have to remove me from my apartment with a backhoe.
My big boy came home early and rescued his poor mama from the ants. He’s my hero!
P.S. What’s a Junebug?
Congrats to Emily ( and her proud mum). Well done on the gym too.
Flame throwers are good for frying bugs! – or try one of those creme brulee kitchen torches!
Oooooo, pretty. Like what you done with the template.
All that gym going wore me out just reading about it Shelli, congrats!
You’re scared of junebugs??
God i cant Wait For Sams blog.
It will be the BEST.
“AH! BUGS!”
Anyone? Eek the Cat? Anyone?
I sing “You are my Sunshine” in cartoon voices to Fiancee to make her smile.
Blue–Spiders don’t bother me so much. Unless they are really big and hairy, then they freak me out.
Mac–That’s awesome. I’m sure my Dad sang to me, too, but I don’t remember. It’s too bad, too, because I know he had a beautiful singing voice.
Fab–You know, for some reason, I never thought of using a flamethrower. I wonder why that wasn’t the first thing that I thought of.
Charlotte–Thanks. When you come back to this blog, check out his comment on this post. It is exactly the kind of thing that I am talking about. He is a weird, weird child.
Melissa–My sister, I know exactly what you mean. That is exactly the reason I am terrified of them. My brothers used to catch them and throw them in my hair so that they could watch me turn into a screaming freakazoid! I shudder just thinking about it.
Lynda–Oddly, Sam has a similar sense of humor. Only not quite as twisted. He’s still young, give him time.
Metalmom–Ewwww! I hate flying ants, too. Yuck.
Metalmom–Oh, and thank you.
Dutchy–Yah, I owe Lynda something. She has come through for me.
Peggy–hee hee hee on your May scout comment.
Emily plays the flute and the piccolo. She’s pretty good if I do say so myself.
Finn–I know. I am not sure why. I am updating to the newer version of WordPress tomorrow. Hopefully that will take care of the problem.
Tug–It may just end up being a lot of nonsense talk. You know how 12 year old boys are. Weirdos.
Wander–Thanks. A hoot it will be.
Kat–June bugs can fly at you. I hate them. Move by me and we can be gym buddies.
Metalmom–Check out this post. Number 17. *shudder*
Ms. Demmie–I am going to try one of those creme brulee torches. Of course they would be awfully close to me in order for me to get them with it. I might end up burning all my hair off.
Slick–Thank you, it was our girl Peggy. She did your template, too. I am terrified of June bugs.
Sam’s Fan–Yah, he’s a real card.
Todd–Awww…you will make a good husband.
That post made me smile. My Mom used to sing that song to me.
June bugs are yucky.
Again, I don’t know how I have missed all your posts – for some reason you have an exclamation point by your name on my bloglines which means the postings are showing up… anyhoo…
I just had to comment, that was the song that I sing to my son every single night. I started for the same reason you did, he calmed down immediately as a baby when I sang it, and since he was probably about 3 months old I have sang it to him every single night before he goes to sleep. I even call him when he isn’t here, just so he never forgets that mommy loves him
He says that no one sings it like mommy, and there is no better feeling.
